World Feeds Swims Strongly Around the Globe
When it comes to innovative nutrition for ornamental fish, multi award-winning, Thorne-based World Feeds Limited is right up there.
Established in 2005 by Mark Wilson, a self-taught scientist with wide practical experience in ornamental aquaculture, the company now sells its Vitalis Aquatic Nutrition products in more than 35 countries.
From recently extended premises a tight team of experienced specialists, headed by managing director, Peter Kersh, World Feeds manufactures an extensive range of ground-breaking fish foods, in pellets, flakes and grazers containing the finest ingredients, utilising bespoke machinery designed and developed in-house. The company sells to distributors, retailers, fish keepers and many of the most prestigious public aquariums across the world. Its customers include the famous Dubai Mall Aquarium, Sea Life Centres, Legoland and the world’s largest oceanarium in Sentosa, Singapore.
With substantial and invaluable funding from Finance Yorkshire, World Feeds has been able to extend its premises significantly and build two new and unique extruders which will enable the company to increase its production capacity by more than 300 per cent. Other areas of automation are also being worked on to improve efficiencies and drive out cost, as growth of more than 30 per cent per year is planned over the next five years. A new production manager started in December to this end.
The key focus of development in 2017 will be the aquarium and retail markets in Germany, Benelux and Scandinavia. In addition, the company is negotiating with distributors to develop new areas in the Middle East and South America and to this end, showcases its products consistently at major trade shows around the world. To support this effort World Feeds recently appointed a specialist to expand aquariums’ sales in the UK and overseas.
To take advantage of its unique manufacturing techniques, foundations are also being laid in completely new areas of the feeds market which the company plans to reveal soon.
A member of Doncaster Chamber of Commerce for many years, World Feeds continues to appreciate its support services, primarily to find out what is going on in the region and also take part in events which are informative and constructive. The company fully supports the chamber’s determined efforts to drive its agenda in the interests of all businesses in the region.
Peter Kersh was recently appointed chairman of the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) as not only the first small company to hold this position but also the first fish food company.
Commenting on his appointment, and on Brexit Peter said: “I was honoured to be appointed to this important position, which I feel reflects World Feeds’ reputation. Brexit means uncertainty for our trading position in the EU, which is our key market and, as most of our ingredients are sourced there, the fall in sterling means higher costs. Despite this, with continued vision and purpose, I am confident that World Feeds, as recently quoted by a recognised journalist in the industry, will remain “the best fish food ever!”
